Drug Which Fights H1N1- Oseltamivir

H1N1 is spreading globally nowadays. Many death case reported due to H1N1. Comunity is start to scare and panic of this pandemic events. Though no cure is discovered until now , we still left 1 type of medication who can withstand H1N1 temporarily. This is one of our antiviral drugs , Oseltamivir.


This drug might be strange to population but it is famous in the health care professional group. They prefer called it Tamiflu (orginal brand name). It is used as prophylaxis and treatment in virus influenza infection such as H1N1. Anyhow , oseltamivir is not drug who can 100% treat H1N1.


Here is some drug information about Oseltamivir :


Oseltamivir is a prodrug. It need body enzyme to activate to become the active form, oseltamivir carboxylate. This drug will inhibited the influenza virus neuraminidase with the possibility of alteration of virus particle aggregation and release.

Oseltamivir is extensively converted to oseltamivir carboxylate by esterases located predominantly in liver. Absorbed oseltamivir and oseltamiver carboxylate are mainly eliminated in urine (70%). Meanwhile the other (20%) will eliminate in in feces.


Indication of oseltamivir is for treatment and prevention of the Influenza. For the treatment dose of influenza :

Patient or children who is > 40kg will be given 75mg oseltamivir twice daily for 5 days when they clinically present typical symptoms of influenza. It only used when influenza virus is circulating in the comunity.


Meanwhile for the prevention dose of influenza :

Patient or children who is > 40kg will be given of 75mg osteltamivir once daily for 10 days . Therapy should be initiate as soon as possible after close contact with individual with infected patients

For the patient who is children or weight under 40kg , dosage adjustment need to be done based on their body weight.


Side Effects

Common Side Effects include :

Vomiting , Nausea , Diarrhoea , Abdominal Pain , Acute Bronchitis , Dizziness and Fatigue are the common side effects of oseltamivir.

Fishes

Caffeine

Carbonated drink when take with the flu medication, the effect of might decrease. It is due to carbonated inhibit the absorption of the flu medication into our blood circulation system. It is advisable to take flu medication with plain water (milk also not recommend). Aspirin which contain in the flu medication can’t absorb in to body due to the carbonated drink. IN addition, this also can harm our liver function.

Cake and cheesy biscuit also can lower down the effect of flu medication. Aspirin / paracetamol in the medication will get bind with sugar in the food, chelation will occur. The medication can’t be absorbed and the effect will be slow down. It is advisable take only plain food when sick to avoid any interaction whole might slow down the recovery of the medication.

Food Might Increase Effect of Flu Medication

Flu medication contain multi combination drug. When flu medication take concurrently with garlic and Chili , it will increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. It is due to garlic and chili contain stimulating effect in the stomach. It might destroy or slow down the formation of the protective layer in the stomach.
